In an Instagram post, one of the world’s most successful tennis players of all time, Serena Williams, has revealed that she is an investor in cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase. Secret Investment revealed by Serena Williams in Coinbase.
Williams announced her VC firm Serena Ventures on social media last month. She secretly founded the firm in 2014. Also, there was a listing of some of its investments, including Coinbase and startups in areas such as fitness, clothing, food and women’s health and community.
In the post, Williams said:
“In 2014, (yes I know I can keep a secret) I launched Serena Ventures with the mission of giving opportunities to founders across an array of industries. Serena Ventures invests in companies that embrace diverse leadership, individual empowerment, creativity and opportunity.”
Over 30 firms with a total market capitalization of $12 billion were on The Serena Ventures website, stating which ones were included in the company’s portfolio. It was not disclosed, however, how much was invested by her VC firm in Coinbase or in which round(s).
Coinbase has seen a total of $546.6 million in investments since its seed round in 2012, according to Crunchbase. However, in October 2018, the company most notably raised $300 million in a Series E round, valuing the firm at $8 billion.
For the third year in a row, Forbes reported that Williams became the highest paid female athlete internationally, in 2018. Along with the income from her own businesses, she has a total earnings of around $18 million.
Alongside her sister Venus, Williams has achieved 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, and won four gold medals at the Olympics. As an athlete, she has won a world record 23 Grand Slam singles titles in the Open era.
Williams’ husband is Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian. Also, he owns a venture capital firm, Initialized Capital, and was an early backer of the exchange.
